Freemassonry and Esotericism

The connection between the Templars, esotericism, and Freemasonry is a fascinating but often misunderstood topic. Historically, the Templars were strictly Catholic and subject to papal authority. The idea that one of the founders might have been a pagan seems to stem from later esoteric and romantic interpretations, which only emerged centuries after the dissolution of the Templars.

The connection with esotericism and Freemasonry:

  1. Freemasonry and the Templars: In the 18th century, some Masonic lodges began adopting the symbolism and rituals of the Templars. This led to speculation that Freemasonry descended from the Templars, although there is no historical evidence to support this. This contributed to the mystification of the Templars as guardians of secret knowledge.
  2. Esotericism and the Templars: Many modern esoteric movements have attempted to link the Templars to hidden knowledge, such as Gnosticism or pagan traditions, though this is historically questionable. These stories often claim that the Templars secretly adopted non-Christian ideas or practices, which contributed to their later condemnation by the Church.
  3. Rumors about pagans: The story of a “pagan” founder may possibly be linked to the heresy accusations against the Templars during their trial in the 14th century. At that time, they were accused of idolatry and worshiping a mysterious entity called “Baphomet.” However, these accusations were false and served to break their power.

Although there is no evidence that one of the founders was a pagan, it is interesting to see how the mythology surrounding the Templars has evolved over the centuries.
